A STUDY ON TRANSLOCATION OF HEAVY METALS IN RICE

Abstract
This experimental study was carried out to investigate the translocation of heavy metals in rice, Oryza Sativa L., under wet culture by using two small sized rice pads made of cement structure. One of the rice pads, named Test group, was applied with Methyl Mercury Chloride, Metallic Cadmium, ¢¥Lead Acetate, Cupric Sulfate as pollutants, and soil, straw and rice collected following fall ,ere analyzed, and heavy metal content of each group was compared.
The results of study were as follows:
1. In the test group, heavy metals were found in soil at the content level of Mercury 11490.6 ppb, ¢¥Cadmium 17.88 ppm, Lead 165.44ppm, Copper 145.60ppm, Arsenic 17.7 ppm, and in rice at the content :level of Mercury 2395ppb, Cadmium 0. 84ppm, Lead 0. 21 ppm, Copper 3. 25ppm, and Arsenic 0. 24ppm.
2. In the control group, heavy metals as naturally occurring were found in soil at the content level -of Mercury 94. 2ppb, Cadmium. 0.48ppm, Lead 43.96ppm, Copper 18.43ppm, Arsenic 3. 9ppm, and in rice at the content level of Mercury 11. 3ppb, Cadmium 0.007ppm, Lead 0. 17ppm, Copper 2.11 ppm and Arsenic 0. 06ppm.
3. In the ratio of heavy metals found in rice and soil of the test group, Mercury was highest among the five heavy metals, and Cadmium fell. on the next priority of high value, and Arsenic, Copper and Lead were regarded as heavy .metals being poorly translocated in rice.
4. In the straw, Mercury and Cadmium which were regarded as easy translocating heavy metals did not show the difference of the content level between trunk and leaves while Arsenic, Copper and Lead" were found higher in leaves than in trunk.
5. Mercury was found higher in rice than in straw while other heavy metals were usually found higher in straw than in rice.
